Peripheral venous blood gas analysis versus arterial blood gas analysis for the diagnosis of respiratory failure and metabolic disturbance in adults

The primary focus of this review is to determine the accuracy of peripheral venous blood gas (PVBG) analysis for diagnosing respiratory failure (RF) or metabolic disturbance (MD) of any type, as demonstrated by abnormalities in tissue pO2, pCO2, pH and HCO3.

To assess the accuracy of PVBG analysis in diagnosing each specific type of RF or MD, particularly Type 2 RF as demonstrated by tissue hypercapnia. We will assess the accuracy of the PVBG analysis when used to diagnose Type 1 RF, Type 2 RF with hypoxia, acidosis, alkalosis, as well as respiratory dysfunction (as indicated by hypocapnia).

This is a protocol.
