Folic acid supplementation and malaria susceptibility and severity among people taking antifolate antimalarial drugs in endemic areas

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows:

To examine the effects of folic acid supplementation, at various doses, on malaria susceptibility (risk of infection) and severity among people living in areas with various degrees of malaria endemicity. We will examine the interaction between folic acid supplements and antifolate antimalarial drugs.

Specifically, we will aim to answer the following.

Among uninfected people living in malaria endemic areas, who are taking or not taking antifolate antimalarials for malaria prophylaxis, does taking a folic acid-containing supplement increase susceptibility to or severity of malaria infection?

Among people with malaria infection who are being treated with antifolate antimalarials, does folic acid supplementation increase the risk of treatment failure?

This is a protocol.
