Heidi learned about Cochrane through her university coursework. Since then, Heidi has been involved in Cochrane Engage opportunities and beyond. Our Patient and Public Involvement Manager, April English, sat down with Heidi to talk about her motivations to getting involved, the impact it’s had, top tips, and much more.

Tell us about yourself! Who are you and how did you get started in patient and public involvement in research?

I am Heidi Simpson or Lou. I am a student at Macquarie University, Australia, studying a Bachelor of Science in Human Movement / Music and Film. My coursework made me aware of Cochrane and through some research, I found that the best pathway offered was to go into patient and public involvement until I complete my degree.

What motivated you to become part of Cochrane’s evidence community?

I have a strong interest in becoming a researcher and want to gain as much insight into the field as possible. Research has shown me that there are many different approaches and pathways to becoming involved in the field.

Since joining Cochrane, what moment or project are you especially proud of?

The Cochrane Engage platform has offered surveys that are available to us as part of the community, and I have been happy to provide feedback and get involved. I have become involved in reviewing research papers and writing journal articles as a starting place for publishing papers, articles and formative work. These projects are informational journals which reflect my current learning and experience.

Can you share a story where you or someone you know were involved in health research, and how that experience made a difference?

I currently have the privilege of doing my Professional and Community Engagement (PACE) unit with Diana Matovic, at Lifespan Health and Wellbeing Research Centre, Macquarie University. Two students have been chosen to intern for the spring, and we are part of the research into emotional health and wellbeing for older adults. This work is designed to support and improve the quality of life of those who are experiencing emotional or mental health issues in age. The research will help to identify methods and strategies that will help the aging population enjoy a healthy and happy lifestyle.

What prompted you to join Cochrane, and what are you looking forward to as part of our Network?

I am looking forward to being able to share my experiences with Cochrane as a patient and member of the community. At this stage I have been involved in surveys and questionnaires that allow me to provide feedback.

I created a membership because my university is involved. The Cochrane Engage platform has been my initial source of community engagement and I have been reading through some articles too.

What advice or encouragement would you give to others thinking about getting involved?

The Cochrane Patient and Public Involvement Network is easy to follow and use.

The Cochrane Patient and Public Involvement Network is easy to follow and use. There is no pressure to get involved and you can go at your own pace. It easy to get help and further information if you have questions and you can be as involved as you want. It is also free, private and professional.
