The Cochrane International Mobility programme connects successful applicants with a placement in a host Cochrane Group, learning more about the production, use, and knowledge translation of Cochrane reviews. The programme offers opportunities for learning and training not only for participants but also for host staff.

In this series, we profile those that have participated in the Cochrane International Mobility Program and learn more about their experiences.

When was your first experience with Cochrane?

I first came into contact with Cochrane in 2020, during a very unusual and significant period in my life. My husband had received a significant job offer in Chicago, involving a two-year relocation, and we had just decided as a family to accompany him on this new adventure. At that time, I was trying to figure out how I could make the most of those years for my medical career — I used to work as a neonatologist in Genoa — despite not being able to practise as a clinician there. It was then that I took part in a Cochrane training course organised by Cochrane Sweden.

After the course, I began my first review, 'Ibuprofen for acute postoperative pain in children', with Matteo Bruschettini and a group of international authors, including colleagues from Cochrane Sweden and Cochrane South Africa. This was exactly what I needed, as it allowed me to continue working on my clinical interests while living far away from my country and workplace. It also helped me maintain my self-esteem during a difficult period in my life, when the fear of losing my career path while trying to find research collaboration opportunities in Chicago was sometimes overwhelming.

What was your experience with Cochrane International Mobility?

I joined the Cochrane International Mobility project, working remotely from my home in Chicago. I took part in four Cochrane reviews, working in a stimulating international environment. I had the opportunity to learn a rigorous research method and meet colleagues from all over the world, sharing a variety of academic backgrounds, skills, and interests. This experience broadened my horizons, taught me to think critically about scientific literature, and enabled me to establish a fruitful network of research collaborations.

What did you take home from this experience?

Actually, this is probably the wrong question because it implies that my research experience with Cochrane Sweden has come to an end, when in fact it is ongoing. I would rather discuss the long-term effects of this collaboration. Firstly, I learnt rigorous research methods, a critical approach to scientific literature and strong teamwork skills. Secondly, collaborating with and publishing through Cochrane helped me when I subsequently switched to a research position and left my previous clinical job, as this is usually regarded as solid research experience.

Do you remember the old icebreaker game “If I were…”? Let's play! If Cochrane were a thing, what would it be for you?

I think it would be the fresh air of a Sunday morning spent outdoors. You may be tired from a whole week of work and bored with your daily routine, but if you can overcome your initial laziness and go out, you will experience the benefits of a positive, stimulating, and respectful teamwork.

Was there something that you did not like about Cochrane International Mobility experience?

I probably have a regret: I wish I had the opportunity to do an in-person experience, but my family situation did not allow me to consider it. Nevertheless, whether in person or remotely, I believe this is an excellent learning opportunity, particularly for young researchers.
