We are excited to announce the launch of a new application round for Cochrane Thematic Groups, with a dedicated focus on infectious diseases.

These round welcomes proposals specifically focused on infectious diseases. This is one of the four research priority areas set out in our scientific strategy. The strategy sets out our aim to step up our work in this area – not only supporting efforts against longstanding infectious disease challenges but also investigating newly emerging illnesses and the increasing threat of antimicrobial resistance and helping to respond to outbreaks and potential pandemics. Our hope is that a Thematic Group in this area will strengthen expertise and global collaboration.

Thematic Groups are topic-based groups that will identify priority areas, engage with key stakeholders, maintain the enthusiasm of Cochrane’s volunteer network, support the development and dissemination of high-quality evidence syntheses, and maximize our impact on global health. Groups will work closely with Cochrane’s new Evidence Synthesis Units to ensure Cochrane evidence is relevant, responsive, and impactful.

Application guidance

Applications are open to Cochrane Review Groups, Fields, and Networks, Geographic Groups and Methods Groups or other groups with demonstrated experience of Cochrane evidence synthesis methodology and processes. We are particularly keen to ensure strong leadership from the Global South, including innovative North/South partnerships that reflect the diverse global realities of infectious disease burden.

How to apply:

Applications close on Friday, November 21st 2025 12:00 UK time. We encourage interested Cochrane members and collaborators to apply and help shape the future of Cochrane’s work in infectious diseases.

Key information

What are the minimum requirements for a Thematic Group?

A Thematic Group must:

  • develop and maintain prioritization plans,
  • provide editors and peer reviewers with relevant content expertise to the Central Editorial Service,
  • support author teams to develop Cochrane manuscripts,
  • disseminate Cochrane evidence within their domain, and
  • establish strategic partnerships with other Cochrane Groups.

The Thematic Group will be required to submit an annual report detailing how they have met these criteria. If it is not met, Cochrane Central Team will work with the Thematic Group for one year, to ensure the criteria is met the following year. If it is not met a second year, the Cochrane status of that group will be reviewed.

What should the leadership structure be?

Thematic Groups should have a well-defined leadership structure, comprising a designated leader or a small leadership team that is responsible to Cochrane. If the Group opts to have a leadership team, they should nominate a single contact person who will serve as liaison between the Group and the Cochrane Central Executive Team.

How will Thematic Groups be funded?

Thematic Groups will not receive central funding from Cochrane and must secure adequate funding independently. They are expected to use their content expertise and stakeholder networks to prepare grant applications, with guidance from Cochrane's central fundraising team.

How will Thematic Groups support Cochrane's Evidence Synthesis Units?

Thematic Groups will collaborate closely with Cochrane Evidence Synthesis Units, providing essential content expertise to supplement the topic expertise readily available within the Unit.

We particularly welcome applications from groups led by, or working in partnership with, colleagues in low- and middle-income countries, ensuring that Cochrane’s work reflects diverse global perspectives.
