Prospective copy edit pilot

The prospective copy edit pilot was completed in July 2003. The full report is available as a PDF file.

What was the prospective copy edit pilot?
The prospective copy edit pilot had two parts.
(1) The participants developed the new Cochrane Style Guide (CSG).
(2) The participants piloted a system in which the participants attended a workshop conducted by an external copy editor to learn how to copy edit. The external copy editor then monitored the copy-editing skills of the participants over two publication cycles and provided feedback to the participants. The participants reported on the following: (a) was the workshop helpful?; (b) did this system improve the copy editing of published Cochrane reviews?; and (c) is it feasible to involve an external copy editor in the editorial process of different Cochrane Review Groups (CRGs)?

This group is also developed and maintained the Cochrane Style Resource website for the duration of the pilot.

Who were the participants?
The 10 participants came from six CRGs: Cystic Fibrosis and Genetic Disorders (Tracey Remmington and Nikki Jahnke), Epilepsy (Alison Beamond and Vicki Sparkes), Infectious Diseases (Harriet G MacLehose and Reive Robb), Oral Health (Emma Tavender and Luisa Fernandez), and Pregnancy and Childbirth Group (Sonja Henderson).

All the participants were based in the North West UK. It is because of this microcosm of CRGs and some preliminary work conducted by some of the participants that this pilot was set up amongst these CRGs.

Who organized the pilot?
All of the participants helped with the organization. Harriet G MacLehose and Sonja Henderson were responsible for co-ordinating the pilot.
