Taking traditional Chinese medication (TCM) orally for adhesive small bowel obstruction (SBO)
SBO is one of the most common emergent complications of general surgery. Intra-abdominal adhesions are the most frequent complication of abdominal surgery. SBO due to postoperative intra-abdominal adhesions is associated with a high rate of rehospitalisation and huge costs. Thus, non-operative management is preferred. A comparison of two methods to join small and large bowel together in surgery
Surgery for right-sided bowel cancer or Crohn's disease commonly involve removing a segment of bowel and re-joining the small and large bowel together. The join, or anastomosis, can be made by stapling or sewing. This systematic review found seven randomised controlled trials with a total of 1125 participants (441 stapled, 684 handsewn) comparing these ... -

Prolonged administration of low molecular weight heparin lowers the number of blood clots in the lower limbs after operation in the abdomen or pelvis
Patients subjected to major surgery of the abdomen are at considerable risk of developing blood clots in the veins of the lower limbs. These clots may detach and develop clots in the lungs and cause sudden death. Clots in the limbs may impaire the venous function leading to a life-long tendency to swollen legs and leg ulceration. In order to avoid these ... -

The poor prognosis of patients diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancers ... -

This review addresses two questions. First, "Does the oral administration of water soluble contrast media followed by serial abdominal radiographs during the following 24 hours predict the need for early operation or resolution?"
Second, "Does the administration of water soluble contrast media in patients with adhesive small bowel obstruction facilitate the resolution of symptoms and shorten hospital stay?" Six studies that addressed the first question were included. The pooled results indicated that oral gastrografin is a very accurate predictor of non operative resolution ...
