An important feature of Cochrane Reviews is that they are made available regardless of whether or not they show that the investigated treatment is effective. Decisions about their publication are not biased by the findings. This is important, because people making choices about health care need to consider all the evidence, not just that which is most positive. They also need to know when there is a lack of good quality research to help guide their decision. The new Cochrane Review of strategies to prevent the spread of MRSA in nursing homes makes this point. One of the researchers responsible, Carmel Hughes from Northern Ireland, tells us more about how this review found an evidence gap. Play Now! |
