A Cochrane Review of incentives for smoking cessation found that while incentives seem to work in the short term, there is insufficient evidence to recommend their adoption into routine practice. In an accompanying editorial in The Cochrane Library, Paul Aveyard and Linda Bauld from the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies discuss the questions raised by this review. Linda Bauld spoke to us about some ofthese issues, and about the use of incentives in other areas of public health.
