Methods Groups Newsletter

Table of Contents
Purpose Of The Newsletter

One of the primary roles of Methods Groups is to offer advice and support to other Cochrane entities. The main aims of this Newsletter are therefore to share information among Methods Groups (MGs) and to inform others within the Cochrane Collaboration about their work. The target audience is primarily members of the Cochrane Collaboration MGs but also includes other members of the Collaboration and people outside the Collaboration with an interest in methodological aspects of healthcare research.

The Newsletter is published once a year. The first issue (June 1997) provided background information on the individual MGs and their role within the Collaboration. The second issue (June 1998) focussed on methodological research and included structured abstracts and commentaries for systematic reviews or meta-analyses of methodological studies. Issue 3 (June 1999) included discussions surrounding the issues of registration and identification of research. Each issue also contains recurrent topics such as details of forthcoming meetings, updates from individual MGs, recent reports of individual methodological studies and relevant news from the Cochrane Collaboration.

The opinions expressed in the Newsletter do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the editors, the Cochrane Collaboration, or anyone other than the authors of the individual articles. Contact details for all the MGs and other contributors to the Newsletter, a guide to more information about the Cochrane Collaboration, and details of Cochrane Internet sites and Cochrane Centres can be found at the end of the Newsletter.

This year the Newsletter has been produced by the UK Cochrane Centre with resources from the National Health Service Research and Development Programme. Previously it was produced by the Norwegian Branch of the Nordic Cochrane Centre. The Newsletter is distributed to all MG members and all Cochrane entities. If you would like to suggest topics for future issues or to receive additional copies please contact the UK Cochrane Centre.

Contents About This Issue

Perhaps one of the most exciting developments to be reported in this issue of the Newsletter is the establishment of the Campbell Collaboration. The Campbell Collaboration is an emerging international effort that aims to help people make well informed decisions about the effects of social and educational policies and practices. The possibility of joint Campbell and Cochrane Methods Groups is reported in an article by Harris Cooper who is convenor of a working party set up to oversee the development of Campbell Methods Groups.

This issue of the Newsletter also contains a new section called "Empirical Studies within the Collaboration". This aims to highlight new methodological research that is being carried out within the Cochrane Collaboration. It is hoped that this new section will generate interest and discussion, and can become an increasingly important feature in future issues.

As with previous years, this issue includes structured abstracts and commentaries on topical methodological articles. These include a study looking at the meta-analysis of observational studies and a review, which assesses the quality of medical review articles and is an update of an influential article by Cindy Mulrow in 1987. Other key methodological articles are also discussed.

Finally, we are always very grateful to the many people who have contributed to this Newsletter. We would welcome additional volunteers to help with the preparation of structured abstracts and commentaries for reports of methodology research. Finally, suggestions for future themes or content of the Newsletter would be most appreciated.

8th Cochrane Colloquium Cape Town South Africa
Evidence for Action:
Challenges for the Cochrane Collaboration in the
21st Century
25–29 October 2000

The South African Cochrane Centre will host the 8th Cochrane Colloquium in October 2000. The Colloquium theme, ‘Evidence for Action: Challenges for the Cochrane Collaboration in the 21st Century’ is designed to highlight key issues that need to be addressed by the Collaboration in the short to medium term in order to further its goals. Topics covered will reflect a range of methodological, logistical and social challenges of a rapidly developing organisation operating within a diverse and changing health care environment. This will be the first Colloquium to be held in a developing country and it therefore also presents an ideal opportunity for the Cochrane Collaboration to evaluate the relevance of its activities to people living in resource-poor countries. Come along and experience a memorable visit to southern Africa, and enjoy a stimulating Colloquium.

Registration forms and further information are available from charleen.daries@mrc.ac.za or mandy.salomo@mrc.ac.za Tel: +27 21 9380433/202 or Fax: +27 21 9380395/418.

Following the success of the first two symposia, the next in the series will take place in July 2000. Once again, this will be hosted by the Centre for Statistics in Medicine and will take place in Oxford. It will aim to cover issues related to the methodology of systematic reviews. Consideration of a 4th Symposium is currently under discussion. Further details are available from: Rochelle Seifas, Centre for Statistics in Medicine, Institute of Health Sciences, Old Road, Oxford, OX3 7LF, UK (tel: +44 1865 226615; fax: +44 1865 226962; email: r.seifas@icrf.icnet.uk ).
