Sender: Mona Nasser [monalisa1n@gmail.com] Subject: Iranian Cochrane Informal Network An increasing number of Iranian healthcare professionals have expressed an interest in coming together to establish a more formal arrangement with the UK Cochrane Centre, which is the reference Centre for Iran. An informal network has been established to satisfy this need. Its principal aims are to expand the involvement of Iranian contributors within The Cochrane Collaboration and to work towards establishing an Iranian Branch of the UK Cochrane Centre. More information can be obtained on www.dent.sbmu.ac.ir/icinet.asp?section=1 . The members of ICInet produce a newsletter to keep Iranian contributors informed about the latest activities in Evidence based Health Care and The Cochrane Collaboration in Iran. Sender: Ann Fonfa [AnnFonfa@aol.com] Subject: Colloquium workshop for consumers A Colloquium workshop will be presented by a Consumer advocate member of the Adverse Effects Methods Group. This area should and does affect the way any and all studies are composed and analyzed. Come and listen! Workshop: Adverse events - what is important from a consumer perspective? Host: XV Cochrane Colloquium Date: 2pm, Friday 26 October Location: Sao Paulo, Brazil Details: Summary: A systematic review that considers only the favourable outcomes of an intervention, without also assessing the adverse effects, can mislead by introducing a bias favouring the intervention. However, the assessment of harm can be a complex and time-consuming process, given that an intervention may have a wide-range of potential adverse effects. Review authors may therefore need to focus on selected adverse outcomes that are important in guiding the decisions of consumers and their healthcare providers. This workshop will outline how input from consumers can help review authors focus their adverse effects analysis, and identify any important gaps that need to be addressed in the systematic review. At the end of the workshop, review authors should be able to approach the adverse effects analysis in a more clinically useful manner that is of value to consumers.
