Sender: Janet Wale [ccnet-contact@cochrane.de] Subject: Special edition of the Consumer Network Newsletter The Cochrane Consumer Network asked consumer representatives from Uganda, Rwanda and the US to comment on the relevance of the Cochrane review ‘Lay health workers in primary and community health care’ to them. Responses were structured round a set of questions and a summary of the review was prepared to make the task easier. Godwin Aja, one of the review authors, helped with this process. It was valuable to have Zobeida Bonilla comment from her personal experiences within Latino community health programs in the US as most of the studies included in the review were from North America, a fact that was quickly picked up by Kellen Namusisi (Uganda) and Alex Hakuzimana (Rwanda). The newsletter has additional input from Yuri Baidal of the Centro Cochrane de Centroamérica, Costa Rica, and from Dot Henry from Western Australia through their work involving lay health workers. Kellen (Uganda) and Alex (Rwanda) also commented on a summary of the review ‘Interventions for reducing the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV infection’, where we too covered only the tip of the iceburg. Note that bursary application forms should be received by the Field Coordinator by mail, fax or email by July 28, 2006. Applicants will be advised of their success by August 25 2006. Please note also that there is an amount of $1000 offered to the supporting CRGs of successful applicants to support editorial processes should the CRG wish to take this up. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX C. Sender: Jini Hetherington [JHetherington@cochrane.org] Subject: Publishing reviews in The Cochrane Library first The Publishing Policy Group has provided the attached rationale for requiring Cochrane authors to publish their review in The Cochrane Library first. This rationale will be put onto the homepage of the Review Titles Manager website, and into the next update of The Cochrane Manual on the website in August. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX D. Sender: Chris Bonell [Chris.Bonell@lshtm.ac.uk] Subject: Symposium on non-RCT evaluations The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is planning a one-day symposium: “Evaluating public health interventions: alternatives to RCTs”. The event - which takes place on 6 November 2006 at Birkbeck College, Room B34, Malet Street, London - is free to attend. Speakers, including Mark Petticrew, Betty Kirkwood, Simon Cousens, Azra Ghani, Jonathan Sterne, David Ross and Graham Hart, will identify situations where RCTs are impossible or not useful, and consider other evaluation designs and methods, their strengths and limitations. For further information or to register your intention to attend the symposium, please contact Huyette Shillingford (huyette. shillingford@lshtm.ac.uk).
