Sender: Jini Hetherington [JHetherington@cochrane.org] Subject: Change of membership of the Cochrane Collaboration Steering Group Jim Neilson (Co-Chair) and Davina Ghersi (RGC/TSC representative) stepped down from the Steering Group in October 2005; very warm thanks to them both for their hard work on behalf of the Collaboration for the past several years. New Steering Group members are: Donna Gillies (Australia), representing Authors Adrian Grant (UK), representing Co-ordinating Editors Narelle Willis (Australia), representing Review Group Co-ordinators and Trials Search Co-ordinators Hans van der Wouden (The Netherlands), representing members of Cochrane Review Groups ('at large' position) In addition, the Steering Group approved at their meeting during the Melbourne Colloquium that Trials Search Co-ordinators (TSCs) should have their own representative, pending the review of the Steering Group which Alessandro Liberati will be leading, commencing later this month. An election will therefore be held as soon as possible for someone to represent Trials Search Co-ordinators on the Steering Group. Only those entities that have TSCs and Information Specialists are eligible to vote, and each such entity will have one vote. The fine detail of this election is to be worked out by the Co-Chairs, the Secretariat and Narelle Willis. Once the TSC representative has been elected, Narelle will represent Review Group Co-ordinators only. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX B. Sender: Jini Hetherington [JHetherington@cochrane.org] Subject: Thomas C Chalmers MD Award The Thomas C Chalmers MD Award 2005 was awarded jointly during the Melbourne Colloquium to: Poster P136: 'Trial sequential analyses of six Cochrane neonatal group meta-analyses considering adequacy of allocation concealment', authored by Jesper Brok, Kristian Thorlund, Joern Wetterslev and Christian Gluud, Copenhagen Trial Unit, Denmark. Sender: Jini Hetherington [JHetherington@cochrane.org] Subject: Chris Silagy Prize The recipient of this year's Chris Silagy Prize was Janet Wale of the Cochrane Consumer Network. Sonja Henderson provided information about the Prize to those attending the Annual General Meetings in Melbourne, and Jane Silagy then presented the Prize to Janet. As a reminder, this Prize is awarded at every Cochrane Colloquium to an individual (or organization) who has made an extraordinary contribution to the work of the Collaboration. The Prize consists of a cheque for $AU 1000 (drawn from the Chris Silagy Memorial Fund), a certificate which includes the words 'for extra-ordinary contribution to The Cochrane Collaboration', and expenses associated with attending the Colloquium (to be met by The Cochrane Collaboration). Many congratulations, Janet! XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX E. Sender: Jini Hetherington [JHetherington@cochrane.org] Subject: Reminder – Steering Group Discretionary Fund At its recent meeting in Melbourne, the Steering Group asked me to remind you of the existence of the Discretionary Fund. I was also asked to draw your attention to the second and third criteria, which state that applications should be of widespread benefit. 2. Gain to the Collaboration - The proposal should promise significant gain to all or part of the Collaboration. 3. Collective benefit - The potential benefit of the proposal should not focus on a single entity but apply across a number of entities (for example, by co-ordinating activities). For more information see Section 2.4.1 of the Cochrane Manual, or contact secretariat@cochrane.org. With best wishes, Jini. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX F. Sender: Al Mayhew [al.mayhew@uottawa.ca] Subject: EPOC Group Australian Satellite The National Institute of Clinical Studies is funded by the Australian Government to improve health care by helping close important gaps between best available evidence and current clinical practice. Recognising the importance of evidence to rational health policy-making, the Australian Government has provided funds for the Cochrane Effective Practice and Organisation of Care Group (EPOC) and the National Institute of Clinical Studies (NICS) to establish an Australian EPOC satellite. This satellite was officially announced at the Cochrane Colloquium in Melbourne on October 22nd, 2005. The overall goal of the Australian EPOC satellite is to assist evidence-based policy-making and provide information on methods that could improve evidence uptake in clinical settings. Under the direction of EPOC editor Russ Gruen, the satellite will promote and support systematic reviews of interventions designed to improve health care practice and the delivery of effective health services. It will focus on reviews that are particularly relevant to Australia and the south-east Asian region. For further information, please contact: Alain Mayhew, EPOC Review Group Coordinator, +1 613 562 5800 X2361 (al.mayhew@uottawa.ca) or Jan Davies, Executive Officer, NICS, +613 8866 0402 (jdavies@nicsl.com.au) XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX I.
