Sender: Annie Goss [Annie.Goss@scie.org.uk] Subject: The Launch of Social Care Online Social care just got clearer In the past, finding information about social care hasn't been easy. Library resources have been sparse, journals expensive, and online databases have been both mysterious and inaccessible. But that's all about to change. Social Care Online -managed by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) - is social care's equivalent of Google. Type in anything you want to know about social care, and you'll find the answer to your question. Social Care Online is a virtual warehouse of social care information and is the UK's most complete range of information and research on all aspects of social care. It contains tens of thousands of pieces of information including good practice guidance, government publications, inspection reports, legislation, service user knowledge, social care practice reports, standards documents and training material, consultation documents, directories of other social care resources and organisations, and free access to other major social care databases and websites. Social Care Online has replaced the former electronic Library for Social Care (eLSC), which included CareData. SCIE has been working for some time to make the database bigger, better, and easier to use. The team at SCIE are now delighted to introduce Social Care Online - UK's most extensive database of social care information. Since it's launch in 2001, SCIE has been working to promote good practice and knowledge in social care. Social Care Online is designed to make vital information about social care easily available. It has been designed to be user-friendly and it's free, so it's a key tool for everyone with a career or an interest in social care. It has also been designed to be fully accessible, making it an ideal way for people with visual impairments to access material. Social Care Online will be a useful resource for social care and health care managers who are looking for up-to-date information about good practice, the latest policy debates, and research in specialist areas. Social Care Online also has information about training and learning as well as links to other available resources. The database also offers an excellent way for social care professionals to fulfill post-registration training and learning obligations. The site includes 'teach yourself' tutorials which can help social and health care professionals improve research, people management, and internet skills. You can find results both by browsing social care topics and also by creating your own search query. There are different levels of searching available, ranging from a simple search for people who are 'feeling' their way around and who want a quick and easy response, to a complex search that can search for this and not that, with a side order of that but not this. Social Care Online is updated daily by SCIE's experienced information managers. It offers unrivalled free access and ease of use. Sender: Monica Kjeldstrĝm [mk@cochrane.dk] Subject: Update on RevMan 5 Time Schedule Summary: RevMan 5 scheduled to be released towards the end of 2006 When RevMan 4 was made available in 1999, it was guaranteed that the next mandatory release of the software would not be for at least three years. This was to minimise the work involved for Cochrane Review Groups and their authors when they have to change to new software for the preparation and maintenance of Cochrane reviews. For the last few years, the Information Management System (IMS) team, in collaboration with the IMS Group and its advisory groups and in consultation with the Steering Group and others, have been planning and developing the new IMS. The new IMS consists of the IMS server - Archie - and RevMan 5. Archie is already being used by all entities to maintain contact details, and is currently being piloted by the editorial bases of 15 Cochrane Review Groups for managing reviews and submitting these for publication in The Cochrane Library. Alongside continued development of Archie, the IMS team is now working on RevMan 5 and we are better able to estimate its likely release date. This takes account of the more comprehensive requirements for RevMan 5 than had been originally intended, and we now anticipate that RevMan 5 will be ready towards the end of 2006. As well as supporting the standard Cochrane reviews of the effects of interventions, RevMan 5 will also support the preparation of reviews of diagnostic test accuracy and reviews of methodology. At the time of the Cochrane Colloquium in Melbourne this October, we will be able to provide more details about the new features planned for RevMan 5 and information about the likely timing of the beta testing period. In the meantime, if you have any queries about RevMan 5 or the development of Archie, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sender: Alan Cassels [cassels@shaw.ca] Subject: New Books and Articles - Selling Sickness Thirty years ago, Henry Gadsden, the head of Merck, one of the world's largest drug companies, told Fortune magazine that he wanted Merck to be more like chewing gum maker Wrigley's. It had long been his dream, he said, to make drugs for healthy people so that Merck could "sell to everyone." Gadsden's dream now drives the marketing machinery of the most profitable industry on earth. Using their dominating influence in the world of medical science, drug companies are systematically working to widen the very boundaries that define illness. Old conditions are expanded, new ones are created, and the markets for medication grow ever larger. Being "at risk" for a condition such as high cholesterol or low-bone density is sold as a disease in its own right. Selling Sickness reveals how widening the boundaries of illness and lowering the threshold for treatments is creating millions of new patients and billions in new profits, in turn threatening to bankrupt health care systems all over the world. The antidote to commercially-funded definitions of disease is systematic, independent and objective information and the book makes a strong case for The Cochrane Collaboration.
