Sir Graham Liggins, a pioneer in obstetric research, died 25 August 2010. Sir Graham demonstrated through a 1972 randomized controlled trial that corticosteroids aided in fetal lung development. This discovery eventually led to a worldwide change in obstetric practice and has saved the lives of thousands of premature babies. The results of this pivotal trial were analyzed in the systematic review which is at the top of The Cochrane Collaboration’s logo.
