Including a Translation in the EWB

The EWB has the ability to include translations of content in multiple languages. We have had some questions periodically about this feature, so we thought we'd explain the hows and whys of this feature and some simple steps to utilizing it.

Hows

  • The EWB system enables users to add translations of content on pages by creating separate translation files when a user includes a translation.
  • These bits of text can are then linked to the name of the particular in a menu of languages that appears at the top-right on that page of an entity's site.

Whys

  • Following Principle 7 of the 10 Cochrane Principles concerning "Promoting Access," this functionality was essential to the system.

    Including a translation, step-by-step guide:
  1. After you've opened your website source from within Archie, scroll down to (or use the menu navigation on the left) to the section you wish to edit/add a translation. Say, for instance, it's the "Welcome" section:

  2. As you can see above, the EWB provides for you to "Include" items such as translations. Click in the box next to "Include Language" .
  3. After clicking this box, the area will expand to reveal a text box with some formatting options and space to add a "Title".
  4. Select the language from the drop-down, for example, above, we can choose "Arabic".
  5. Then, provide a "Title".
  6. Now type a "Welcome" message in that language.
  7. Proceed adding more languages if you require them.
  8. Select "Save and Exit" from the tool bar at the top of the EWB editor.
  9. Then, publish your site - right-click on your "website source" file and select "publish".
  10. View the site and you'll now see a small menu of languages in the upper right on the page you added the translations to:

  11. Now, you can click on a language and that text will appear on the page and you can toggle between these languages.
