The EMBASE screening project: six months old and going strong

The EMBASE screening project went live in February 2014 with a very small group of screeners just to make sure things were working well. After a couple of weeks of testing and tweaking, the full roll-out began with some key Cochrane communications. Within a matter of days more than 100 people signed up to become EMBASE screeners. As of August 2014, 563 people have signed up to the EMBASE screening project, and the team has collectively screened 65761 citations and identified 1944 RCTs.

Students 4 Best Evidence announces Wiki Week, September 2014

From Monday 15th to Friday 19th September 2014, Students 4 Best Evidence (S4BE, S4BE.org) are launching their S4BE Wikipedia Week and Edit-a-thon – prizes included! Announcing the establishment of US Cochrane West

Cochrane is delighted to announce the official opening of the West Coast branch of the US Cochrane Center (USCC).

Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon has become the West Coast branch of the US Center of The Cochrane Collaboration.

US Cochrane West will promote evidence-based decision making in health care in the US. It will work in conjunction with its primary center at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health by facilitating accurate, up-to-date Cochrane Reviews and providing support and training to new authors of Cochrane Reviews.

Latest results from 2014 elections to the Cochrane Steering Group

Nine positions on the Cochrane Steering Group (CSG), including one Co-Chair, are eligible for election in 2014. As of August 2014, results are available for seven of the nine positions, with two elections still pending.

Cochrane announces support of new donor

Cochrane is delighted to announce the support of a new donor – Good Ventures, a US-based philanthropic foundation.  In a statement published on its website on 29 July, Good Ventures announced the award of a $300,000 grant for general support purposes ($100,000 a year over three years), citing Cochrane’s work as an important resource in evaluating the work of evidence-backed charities which serve disadvantaged populations worldwide.

2013 Impact Factor released for Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews

The 2013 Journal Citation Report (JCR) has been released by Thomson ISI and effective July 2014 the impact factor for the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) is 5.939. This is an increase on the 2012 impact factor, which was 5.785.

Longtime Cochrane contributor receives lifetime achievement award

Dr Kay Dickersin, Director of the US Cochrane Center, has received the 2014 Ingram Olkin Award for her 'lifetime contributorion to the development of evidence synthesis methods'. Dr Dickersin is Director for the Center for Clinical Trials at Johns Hopkins University and a longtime contributor to The Cochrane Collaboration. Dr Dickersin received the award at the 2014 annual international meeting of the Society for Research Synthesis Methodology (SRSM), hosted by the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York (UK).

RevMan 5.3 now available - training webinars 3 July

The Cochrane Informatics and Knowledge Management Department (IKMD) is happy to announce to all that Review Manager (RevMan 5.3) is now available!

To get it now, go to the download page or use Help > Check For Updates within current RevMan installations. Thanks to quick reports from early adopters, we’ve already fixed a few bugs that had slipped through beta testing, and we’re now at version 5.3.3.

RevMan 5.3 only contains changes that do not require moving to a new file format for reviews. Some of the highlights are:

Announcing the establishment of the Hungarian Cochrane Branch

The German Cochrane Centre is delighted to announce the establishment of the Hungarian Cochrane Branch (HBGCC), based at the University of Pécs. The Director of the HBGCC will be Professor Tamás Decsi, who is a professor of paediatrics and director of the Clinical Centre of the University of Pécs. Dr. Szimonetta Lohner, who has already worked at the GCC and was also closely involved in the establishment of the HBGCC, will be the scientific coordinator. One of the priorities of the HBGCC will be to support and increase Cochrane Review activity in Hungary.

New resources available from the CEU for producing Cochrane Reviews

The Cochrane Editorial Unit (CEU) has compiled two resources for use in producing Cochrane Reviews, using information gathered from the CEU review screening process.
