The overall objective of the review is to assess the effectiveness, safety and economic value of professionally applied fluoride paint-on solutions for caries control in children and adolescents, and their relative value compared to other topical fluorides. The specific objectives are.
a) To determine the effectiveness and safety of professionally applied fluoride paint-on solutions in preventing and treating caries (stopping, slowing or reversing the progress of carious lesion) in children and adolescents against placebo/no treatment.
b) To examine whether the effectiveness of fluoride paint-on solutions in preventing or treating caries is different with different:
i. Baseline caries levels (average DMF/def scores of the sample)
ii. Severity of the lesions (average size; depth, D, 2, 3, 4; or activity status etc. of lesions in sample)
iii. Background exposure to fluoride in water, salt, toothpaste or any other fluoride source
iv. Fluoride compounds (sodium fluoride (NaF), stannous fluoride (SnF2), silver diamine fluoride (SDF), acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF), etc.)
v. Fluoride concentrations (parts per million of fluoride (ppm F))
vi. Frequency of application (times per year)
vii. Duration of application (in minutes).
c) To determine if there is a difference in effectiveness and safety of professionally applied fluoride paint-on solutions compared to other modalities of topical fluorides (toothpastes, mouthwashes, gels and varnishes).
d) To determine if professionally applied fluoride paint-on solutions when used in addition to fluoride toothpaste are more effective than fluoride toothpaste used alone.
e) To assess current evidence on the economic value associated with professionally applied fluoride paint-on solutions compared to other modalities of topical fluorides (toothpastes, mouthwashes, gels and varnishes), in terms of (incremental) resource use, costs and cost effectiveness.
